Got an epic summer on the horizon? From beach breaks to wedding dates, Holly Willoughby's new edit has a look for every occasion! 'I am VERY proud of YOU': Excited Heidi Klum gushes over model daughter Leni, 18, as she graduates from high school If she is suffering from CFS she should get back to a normal life within 12 to 18 months. Counselling and medication may also be helpful. Treatment is a combination of gentle, graded activities and exercise at home and at school - it helps for you and her to have regular meetings with her school nurse, pastoral tutor and possibly her PE teacher as well as ongoing support from a physiotherapist and her specialist who can advise her on what she can expect to be able to do at different stages of her illness. Your daughter's GP will need to refer her to a specialist, ideally a paediatrician with a special interest in CFS. Lack of exercise can lead to thin, brittle bones, poor growth, school failure and possible psychological problems including depression. Even though your daughter may want to sleep all the time complete rest is not a good idea at her age. There is no cure for CFS but there are lots of things that will help. Sixty per cent of children are found to be more allergic than the general population but allergy treatments only help a few. Often children seem to have mild abnormalities of their immune system. One theory is that it is triggered by a viral or fungal infection but there is rarely any evidence of these on laboratory tests. CFS affects about 1 in 1000 teenagers and is probably the commonest medical reason for school absence. If her tiredness continues for more than six months and the underlying cause does not appear to be depression she may have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or myalgic encephalitis (ME). Her GP could discuss this further with her and arrange referral if appropriate. Ask your daughter how she is feeling, if she feels sad, has poor self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, is tearful much of the time, has lost interests or doesn't want to go out these could be signs she is depressed and could benefit from seeing the community psychiatric team. The other possibility is that she may be depressed. You may have to talk to her teachers and school nurse to get an idea about whether such steps are necessary.

Encourage her to keep going to school, perhaps on a reduced timetable or with reduced homework if she seems excessively tired.

Make sure she is eating well and that she is taking a little exercise every day. If her tests are negative the most likely problem is that she has suffered with a viral infection from which she is taking a long time to recover. She needs blood tests to see if there is an underlying cause for her symptoms such as glandular fever, anaemia or another blood disorder, an underactive thyroid gland, diabetes or other medical conditions requiring specific treatment.

The first step, if you have not done so already, is to take her to her GP for a full check up. I can understand why you are worried about your daughter.
